On this week’s Ask Expert session, Mr.Mohamed Inaz reflected on “What’s the Big Deal with the Maldives and Climate Change?” Inaz is Director of Climate Change & Sustainable Development at FJS. Inaz is a graduate of Wageningen University & Research, MSc Geographic Information System (GIS).

FJS takes a look at the newly proposed Income Tax Bill by the Government of Republic of Maldives before People’s Majlis on 14th October 2019.   Through the Bill, the Government aims to enhance and combine the current taxes levied of Business Profit Tax (BPT), Bank Profit Tax, Remittance Tax, Land Sales Tax and Petroleum Tax. The article summarizes the major provisions in the Bill and its implications.

FJS concludes revaluation of three landing crafts owned and operated by MWSC.

FJS concludes the revaluation of three landing crafts owned by MWSC for various works, including transporting materials to their work sites and fueling project sites and Hulhumale’ bottling factory.  

FJS is engaged to conduct tax reviews for Atmosphere Group of Hotels and Resorts.

This engagement will be carried out for the corporate office of the Group, and the Resorts operated and managed by the Group. Namely, Ozen by Atmosphere at Maadhoo, Oblu by Atmosphere at Helengeli, Oblu Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli and Kanifushi Island Resort in the Republic of Maldives. 

This engagement will be carried out on a bi-annual basis for one year where FJS will review and report on the Group’s tax computations and payments and pension payments to respective authorities. 

FJS is currently engaged in advising the management of Atmosphere Group of Hotels and Resorts on the amendments to the relevant tax laws, regulations and rules issued by the relevant authorities and bodies. 

FJS is also the representative engaged, on behalf of Atmosphere Core Pvt Ltd and Atmosphere Kani Resort Pvt Ltd, for a case appealed at the Tax Appeal Tribunal.

The study presents the level of CSR engagement among the business community and non-corporate stakeholders of CSR promotion in the Maldives and provides recommendations for a CSR policy framework for the Maldives. The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development (MED) and the Maldives National Chamber for Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) with support from UNDP, and conducted by FJS from June 2010 to August 2010. The research methodology, which was developed in consultation with MED, MNCCI and UNDP, primarily makes use of qualitative methods and desk research.

This report presents the findings and recommendations of a comprehensive study of the civil society sector conducted during April – July 2011. The study was intended to describe the nature of the civil society sector in the Maldives, identify cross-cutting issues faced by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Maldives and to highlight gaps and areas of concern in the present Associations Act.

FJS concludes developing the National SME Strategy and Action Plan for the Maldives. The project was led by the Ministry of Economic Development with support from UNDP. As part of the project, FJS held individual consultation meetings and strategy development workshops with relevant stakeholders including government agencies, education and training providers, trade associations, members of SME community and private sector service providers. The project further involved developing and validating priority initiatives for SME development and recommended institutional support and the governance process for the implementation of SME strategy.
